Overview

About this trip

Immerse yourself in Tanzania’s rich tapestry of traditions, communities, and landscapes, blending authentic cultural experiences with comfort and style.

This three day cultural safari offers a closer look at Tanzania through its people, traditions, craftsmanship and everyday way of life. The journey begins in Arusha, where local markets and artisan workshops introduce you to Tanzanian creativity before heading into the Ngorongoro Highlands to meet Maasai communities.

Along the way, you will have opportunities to take part in cultural activities, learn about traditional beadwork, watch local dances, and gain a better understanding of pastoral life in the highlands. The journey then continues to Lake Eyasi, where you will meet members of the Hadzabe and Datoga communities and learn about their different traditions, including hunting and gathering, metalworking, and pastoral practices.

The safari is designed around genuine cultural encounters rather than simply visiting places. You will have time to speak with local hosts, observe traditional skills, ask questions, and understand how different communities have maintained their customs while adapting to the changing world around them. It is a suitable choice for travellers who want to complement their wildlife experiences with a deeper understanding of the people and cultures that are part of the country's story.

Day by day

Detailed itinerary

  1. Your cultural journey begins when you arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where Elevated Tanzania Safaris guide will meet you and assist you with your transfer to your selected lodge in Arusha. After settling into your lodge, take some time to relax with a welcome drink before meeting your guide for a short briefing about the days ahead.

In the afternoon, head into Arusha to explore some of the city’s local markets, craft centres and small artisan workshops. This is a chance to see a different side of Tanzania beyond its wildlife and landscapes. You may meet local artists working with beads, wood, fabrics and other traditional materials, while learning about the skills and stories passed down through generations.

At the markets, colourful Maasai beadwork offers a glimpse into the importance of jewellery and decoration within Maasai communities. Your guide will help explain the meaning behind different designs and introduce you to the people who make them.

The afternoon is kept relaxed, allowing you time to ask questions, take photographs where appropriate, and perhaps choose a locally made piece to take home. By the end of the day, you will have had your first introduction to Arusha through its people, crafts and everyday culture before returning to the lodge for the evening.
