About

Karanga Camp is one of the most important camps on Mount Kilimanjaro’s southern circuit. A crucial acclimatization and recovery stop positioned between Barranco Camp and Barafu Camp. Sitting at approximately 3,995–4,040 meters (13,106–13,255 ft) on the edge of the Karanga Valley, this camp is used by climbers on the Machame, Lemosho, Shira, and Umbwe Routes as they move closer to the final summit staging area.

If Barranco is famous for the Barranco Wall, and Barafu is known for summit night, Karanga is the “balance point”, where the itinerary often becomes smarter, safer, and more successful. It breaks up what would otherwise be a long, altitude-heavy day, and it gives climbers the chance to “climb high, sleep lower” in a way that improves summit odds.
